Vélez Sarsfield are not considered one of Argentina's traditional 'Big 5', but their record in the last ~30 years would definitely have them among that group. They won 9 league titles between 1993 and 2013 (including the typical South American half-season titles); but undoubtedly the Carlos Bianchi era was the highlight of that spell. Known as one of the greatest managers of all time in Argentina, El Virrey (the viceroy) led Vélez to the 1994 Libertadores title, and topped it off by beating AC Milan in the Intercontinental Cup.

The club play in Liniers, just inside the western edge of Buenos Aires City. Their ground is also used by Argentina's representative rugby teams the Pumas and the Jaguares. El Fortín (the fortress) is named after former President of the club José Amalfitani who prioritised community over honours and wanted to create a home for the children of the area and a sense of belonging. One of its most distinctive features are the giant cans of Coca Cola on the floodlights.
