History
Founded in 1901
River Plate - el más grande (the greatest) are the most successful team in the professional era of Argentine football, with a total of 63 leagues, cups, and international trophies. The club originally played in the La Boca neighbourhood next to rivals Boca Juniors, but moved to Núñez in the wealthy north of the city and became known as the Millionarios (millionaires).
Their rivalry is the biggest in all of Latin America and culminated in River's 2018 Copa Libertadores victory in Madrid (Copa 90's 1hr long documentary on Youtube is a must-view). Buenos Aires, city and province; Argentina; Latin America; the entire globe(?); are all captive to this ultimate of rivalries, the Superclásico.
River lay claim to the most famous team in Argentine history: La Máquina (the locomotive/machine) was the name given to the mythical front 5 of Labruna, Pedernera, Múñoz, Moreno and Loustau; although they only actually played together 18 times.
