River Plate - el más grande (the greatest) are the most successful team in the professional era of Argentine football, with a total of 71 leagues, cups, and international trophies. The club originally played in the Boca neighbourhood next to rivals Boca Juniors, but moved to Núñez in the wealthy north of the city and became known as the Millionarios (millionaires).

Their rivalry is the biggest in all of Latin America and culminated in River's 2018 Copa Libertadores victory in Madrid. The Superclásico is legendary worldwide.

River lay claim to the most famous team in Argentine history: La Máquina (the locomotive/machine) was the name given to the mythical front 5 of Labruna, Pedernera, Múñoz, Moreno and Loustau; although they only actually played together 18 times.

River’s home from 1938 has been the Monumental, Argentina’s biggest stadium. It has seen countless days of glory from El Más Grande, and on top of that Argentina won the 1978 World Cup there also. Recently the running track surrounding the pitch has been removed with the aim of adding more seats and bringing fans closer to the action. The wide avenues and streets leading up to the stadium add to the sense of size and occasion.
