History
Founded in 1905
El Rey de Copas, the king of the cups. Independiente are the most successful club in South America having won 7 Copa Libertadores titles, including 4-in-a-row between 1972-75. The club were dubbed the Diablos Rojos (red devils) due to their playing style, and undoubtedly influenced by their red shirts (adopted in homage to the touring Nottingham Forest side of 1905).
Their away shirt often features a Scottish saltire - the club's alternative crest was adopted as an homage to the Saint Andrew's School team, Argentina's first champions. The club's (and Maradona's) all-time idol is Ricardo Bochini, but should Sergio Agüero return, that may change!
